Greater Manchester consists of the boroughs of
Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside,
Trafford, Wigan, Manchester and Salford. Situated in the
North East, it shares borders with Derbyshire, Cheshire
and Lancashire. On the eastern side of the county lies
the Pennines, from where its two rivers, Mersey and
Tame, spring from. Greater Manchester played an
important role in the industrial revolution and proudly
boasts the first cotton mill and ultimately became a
major manufacturer of textiles. Tourist attractions
include The Imperial War Museum North and the Lowry
Theatre and Exhibition Centre, named after famous local
artist L S Lowry. |
