Located in East Anglia, Suffolk is mostly low lying
with very few hills. On the eastern boundary of the
county is the sandy coastline of the North Sea. The
north gives rise to the wetlands of the Broads. Arable
farming plays a prominent part in the economy of
Suffolk, hence it is home to the annual agricultural
show in Ipswich. It is also a popular haunt for
archaeoligists with finds from the Stone Age, Iron Age
and Bronze Age. Sutton Hoo is the most famous dig with
the discovery of an Anglo Saxon burial ship. A prominent
figure born in the county is the artist John Constable,
capturing many Suffolk scenes on canvas which gave rise
to it being dubbed Constable Country. Other notable
residents are the jockeys Lester Piggott and Frankie
Dettori, mainly because of the racing held at Newmarket. |
