The county of Cheshire is named after the town of
Chester although the largest town is Warrington. The
county is mainly rural with many small villages. Farming
plays a major role and is primarily dairy and cattle. It
is also famous for its Cheshire cheese. Other industries
include salt, chemicals and silk weaving. Cheshire has a
wealth of history which includes prehistoric burial
grounds, Iron Age and Roman Forts and remains of
Medieval Castles such as Beeston castle. Chester
Cathedral dates back to Medieval times. Cheshire is
famous for many things, notably the Cheshire cat which
features in the book 'Alice in Wonderland', written by
locally born Lewis Carroll. |
